In a recent appearance, star Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for portraying the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image promoted by official channels that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement rather than a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a made-to-measure version of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from chaos. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with him to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with many contenders. At the centre to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state in practice.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, among them a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who studied his rise, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: loyal, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A property developer familiar with the events said the key criterion was controllability and loyalty, not strength.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the image of him as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not involved with field operations.

Curiously, the move to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by the actor's debut as 007. His harder version led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
