Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into areas of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military control to support the hunt for the remains of individuals held captive.

Truce Agreements and Hostage Bodies Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, Hamas is required to hand over the bodies of all captives promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of 15 of those held captive but zero in the last five days, as some of those remains are thought to be in locations past the yellow line marking the temporary truce line.

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the group searched for the remains of the deceased individuals past the military-established ‘yellow boundary’,” said a representative for the committee.

The spokesperson continued: “Those involved to the conflict determined the procedures of the mission and entrusted the Red Cross to serve as a impartial mediator. We was had no part in the discussions.”

The official additionally clarified: “The ICRC was did not participate in the search for the deceased nor does it engage in the retrieval of remains.”

The search for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire reached between the two sides. However, the attempt to locate the bodies has been challenging from the outset, given the existence of an estimated 60m tonnes of rubble across the territory, where, as per local health authorities, at least ten thousand residents are listed as unaccounted for, buried under the rubble.

Conflicting Claims on Remains Whereabouts

Hamas has claimed it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its units that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly eliminated during military strikes.

American Stance and Weapons Surrender Discussions

Although the US president has acknowledged that some of the remains are difficult to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over immediately and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”
